As Principal of Bruce College Cork, I have the privilege of working with students who are ambitious, capable and determined. As we head into the final weeks before the Leaving Certificate begins on June 3rd, I want to speak directly to you about how to make these last few weeks count – and how to do so with balance, confidence and belief in yourself.

The work you do between now and the first exam will matter. Not because it should feel overwhelming, but because small, consistent, focused efforts can make a real difference. This is your opportunity to bring everything together and to achieve your full potential.

  1. Be Strategic, Not Stressed

At this stage, “doing more” is less important than “doing the right things well”. Start by identifying:

  • Your strongest subjects and topics – maintain these with regular revision and exam practice.
  • Your weaker areas –-target them calmly and methodically rather than avoiding them.

A clear, realistic study plan for each week between now and June 3rd will reduce anxiety and increase confidence. Build your plan around past exam questions, prioritising topics that come up frequently. Quality over quantity is key.

  1. Make Past Papers Your Best Friend

One of the most effective ways to improve marks now is active exam practice:

  • Do questions under timed conditions.
  • Read marking schemes carefully.
  • Learn how marks are awarded and how examiners want answers structured.

This not only improves content knowledge but builds exam technique – often the difference between a good and a great result.

  1. Master the Basics Done Brilliantly

In every subject, there are fundamentals:

  • Key definitions
  • Core formulas
  • Essential quotes, diagrams or methods

Ensure you can recall these accurately and confidently. Getting the basics right consistently can unlock a surprising number of marks across papers.

  1. Look After Your Energy and Wellbeing

Peak performance is not just academic – it is physical and mental too.

  • Maintain a regular sleep routine.
  • Eat properly and stay hydrated.
  • Take short, purposeful breaks during study.
  • Get fresh air and light exercise.

Burnout helps no one. Steady effort, sustained over weeks, wins every time.

  1. Ask for Help, Early and Often

You are not expected to do this alone. Teachers in Bruce College are here to support you right up to the final day. If something isn’t clicking, ask. A five-minute explanation now can save hours of frustration later. Equally, talk to someone if you’re feeling under pressure. Reaching out is a sign of strength, not weakness.

  1. Believe in the Process, and in Yourself

It is normal to feel nervous as exams approach. Nerves mean you care. What matters is how you respond:

  • Focus on what you can control: preparation, effort and attitude.
  • Avoid comparing yourself to others.
  • Take confidence from the work you have already done.

You are more prepared than you think.

A Final Word

The Leaving Cert is an important milestone – but it does not define you. What it can do is open doors when you give it your best shot. Between now and June 3rd, commit to purposeful study, look after yourself, and trust the preparation you have put in.

Every hour of focused effort counts. Every improvement matters. And every one of you can finish this journey with pride.

On behalf of the entire Bruce College Cork community, I wish you calm minds, steady confidence and success in the weeks ahead.

Warm regards,

David Loughrey
